We happened to find ourselves in sunny Shoreditch last week, just before the Olympics mayhem landed in East London. After much joking about fake black-rimmed glasses and this suitably Shoreditch YouTube video, we had a great stay and discovered some friendly and inspiring faces, places and spaces.
First spotted was some Ben Eine’s typographic street art on Ebor Street just next to our abode for the weekend, the swanky Shoreditch House (see main image).
We also popped into the Handsome Frank Tweet a Brief exhibition in The Church of London’s basement gallery. All of the artwork on display was in response to a range of Twitter briefs, including Helen Musselwhite’s dolls house that had come to life and Stephen Cheetham’s 140 character illustration with some familiar faces.
Just next to The Church of London we stumbled across the type-filled headquarters of Glyphics, a sign-making studio with an impressive collection of retro shop letters, including our very own initials.
We’re already looking forward to our next trip East and hopefully the Olympic tourists will take some time out to explore the craftsmanship that really makes this area special.
